Variable Renewable Energy (VRE)

A generic term for intermittent forms of Generation Plant that are powered by renewable resources which are inherently variable, such as wind and solar energy. While it is technically correct to also refer to Distributed Photovoltaics (DPV) as VRE, the term is mostly used to describe large, utility-scale applications of solar and wind generation.  Due to the inherently variable output of VRE, their deployment and Power System integration at scale also requires the deployment of commensurate volumes of Firming Resources.

Given the fast-evolving nature of power system transformation, the Future Grid Accelerator (FGA) has the status of a perpetual BETA version. Your suggestions for how each concept and definition may be enhanced are very welcome.

All feedback will be reviewed and considered for inclusion in subsequent updates.
