Essential System Services (ESS)

A set of critical physics-based services required to maintain the Frequency of a Power System within acceptable limits and respond to unexpected disturbances or events. These services are typically procured by the System Operator from Generation Plant and other Energy Resources through service-specific regulated markets.

The term Ancillary Services may be used with reference to or as a synonym of ESS.
