Battery Energy Storage System (BESS)

An electrochemical Energy Storage device that stores the output of Generation Plant in a manner that may be discharged for use later.  All charging and discharging of a BESS is under the control of a dedicated battery management system.

BESS chemistries vary in their key technical characteristics including rated Power output (kW/MWh) and Energy storage capacity (kWh/MWh), charge/discharge profile, operational longevity and round-trip efficiency.  Common BESS types include Lithium-ion, Lead-acid and Redox Flow.

Given the fast-evolving nature of power system transformation, the Future Grid Accelerator (FGA) has the status of a perpetual BETA version. Your suggestions for how each concept and definition may be enhanced are very welcome.
